Bookwhen allows events to be restricted to men or women when required. Understanding how to set these restrictions helps you manage bookings appropriately while keeping your events organised and compliant.

Overview
Some events on Bookwhen may include a gender restriction. Currently, these restrictions are limited to:
Men
Women
No restrictions (open to all)
These options follow the OpenActive standard, which is based on UK Government Design Standards. OpenActive currently only allows these three choices, and this is unlikely to change soon.
Setting them on your entry
To add a gender restriction to the event dates/times in your entry:
From your Scheduling page, select Create an entry to add a new entry:
Or select an existing entry from your scheduling list, then Edit entry to open the entry:
Select the Information tab within the entry and scroll down to the Additional details section. Choose the relevant restriction (or leave blank for no restriction):
Continue adding or amending any relevant info on the entry, and when finished, remember to Save your changes.

Why are options limited?
The current standard is designed to keep event information simple and consistent. While more flexible options have been discussed, including free-text entries, the system only supports male, female, or no restriction for now.
How to make your event inclusive
If your event is open to everyone, select No restrictions. If your event is intended for a specific gender, choose Men or Women.
We understand that gender is a personal and diverse experience. While the current system is limited, choosing No restrictions (or leaving it blank) ensures your event is welcoming to everyone, and you can add additional context in your event description to make your inclusivity clear.
Does Bookwhen enforce gender restrictions?
No, this setting isn't enforced on booking. Please make sure you monitor bookings on events with this setting enabled to ensure booked attendees match your requirements.
