This article covers:
What is Klarna?
Klarna is a global payment provider that allows your customers to choose from various flexible payment options, such as paying later or paying in instalments. By integrating Klarna with your Bookwhen account, you can offer your customers a smooth checkout experience with a variety of payment methods, increasing the likelihood of conversion and customer satisfaction.
π‘ Before getting started, we recommend reviewing our Understanding Klarna payments article for detailed information about the different payment options and associated processing fees.
Adding Klarna to your Stripe Integration
To activate Klarna on your Stripe account:
Log into your Stripe Dashboard.
Confirm that your logo, brand information, and contact emails are up to date. When you add Klarna as a payment method, they will be shared with Klarna.
Select the Settings toggle βοΈ, Payments, then Payment methods:
On the list of payment methods, find Klarna and select Turn on.
To use Klarna, please ensure you select 'Bookwhen configurations - Default' under Payments > Payment methods.
Checkout process
When customers choose Klarna at checkout, Klarna securely redirects them to its site, where they can select a preferred payment option, including upfront payment, instalments (pay in 3), or pay in 30 days.
For example:
π‘ Please note: The availability of these options depends on the customer's billing address and transaction amount.
Once the payment is accepted, you will receive the full order amount in your Stripe account (minus fees). Klarna will collect the purchase amount directly from your customer, including any future instalments, if applicable.
Presenting Klarna as an available payment option to your customers
Klarna has marketing compliance guides that you must comply with if you are adding Klarna as a payment method.
β οΈ Only pre-approved downloaded assets or Klarna On-Site Messaging will be deemed approved by Klarna. These can be found on Klarna's Marketing Guides. Please follow the rules within your selected country.
Adding a Klarna
If you add Klarna as a payment option, you must use their pre-approved messaging.
For example, in the UK, you can use the following simple options, as they are not considered financial prompts:
"Klarna available"
"Klarna available at checkout"
If you choose to use a pre-approved Klarna messaging option like "Pay in 3 with Klarna," you must also include the relevant BNPL (Buy Now Pay Later) disclosures on your public booking page, as this constitutes a financial prompt within the "Invitation to Credit."
For example, in the UK, you must display the following:
"Pay in 3 with Klarna"
Klarna's Pay in 3 is an unregulated credit agreement. Borrowing more than you can afford or paying late may negatively impact your financial status and ability to obtain credit. 18+, UK residents only. Subject to status. Late fees may apply. Ts&Cs apply.
π‘ Be sure to follow Klarna's guidelines for your selected country.
π¬π§ UK Specific Guidance
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has regulations in place for advertising Klarna's Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) methods in the UK. To ensure compliance and avoid potential issues, it's essential to use messaging pre-approved by Klarna.
β
For your convenience, you can find all of Klarna's UK-approved messaging within their UK Financial Promotion Rules.
