SEO: How to make your public page easier to find online

Learn how to improve the discoverability of your Bookwhen public page in Google and other search engines using SEO

Written by Ollie

While you can share your Bookwhen page or events directly, you may also want to ensure customers can find you through search engines like Google. Helping customers find your public page quickly can increase bookings and improve visibility for your events.

This article explains what SEO-related settings are available on Bookwhen and how to improve the visibility of your public page online.

SEO in a nutshell

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It helps improve how your website appears in search results so more people can find your page and events online.

It focuses on creating a good experience for both users and search engines by making your content clear, relevant, and easy to understand.

Optimising your Bookwhen Public Page for SEO

While there's currently no dedicated SEO section within the admin area, some public page customisation options can help improve how your page appears in search results.

To access these settings:

  1. Open your Public page by selecting the Open public page button at the top of your Scheduling page:

Scheduling screen with an arrow pointing at the ‘Open public page’ button, highlighting where users can click to open their public page.

  2. Select Customise page in the top right to open your settings:

Public page screen showing blank text fields labelled 'Public Page title', 'Alert message', and 'General information'

  3. Scroll down until you reach the Public Page title, Alert message and General information section:

    • If you have set a banner image, you will need to scroll past the image to reach this section.

Let's cover these options in more detail.

Public Page title

Think of this as your SEO headline. The page title appears at the top-left of your public page, above the banner image or colour. In search engines, this is known as the "meta title" or "title tag".

Include your business name and relevant keywords for your sector, while keeping the title concise.

Best practice:

  • Include your business name

  • Add what you offer

  • If based in one area only, include that location

  • Keep it short

Example: Growing plants - Gardening Workshops & Lessons in London

General information

This is your main content for helping search engines understand your page and business. Search engines use it as the meta description, and it also appears in link previews and paid social media ads.

On your public booking page, it appears below the banner section (and any alert message, if shown).

Use this space to share a short summary of your business and schedule, or a friendly welcome message for visitors.

Best practice:

  • Start with SEO keyword + Location in your first sentence

  • Add a simple explanation of your service

  • Keep structure simple and readable

Example: Learn gardening in London with hands-on workshops and expert-led lessons. Perfect for beginners and plant lovers of all levels.

Alert message

Search engines do not treat this as the meta description, but they may choose to show it instead if they think it better summarises the page than the meta description. This happens when the content is a closer match to a user’s search.

Any text added to the alert message appears in a prominent yellow box below the banner section of your public page. Use this space to highlight important information at a glance, such as recent changes or special offers.

Best practice:

  • Don't include the main terms you want to appear for in the alert message

  • Keep it more operational (e.g. updates, important notices)

Example: We will be closed for the Bank Holiday, new term dates will be added from 20th April!

How these details are displayed

The example below shows where these elements appear on the public page:

Public page screen showing Bookwhen logo and image banner plus purple arrows labelled 'Public Page title', 'Alert message', and 'General information' pointing towards these text elements

If we review the search engine preview for the page, these elements also appear there:

Screen from search engine results showing the Bookwhen logo and 'Bookwhen Demo website - Booking by ...' alongside a short description about the page

The linked title in search results shows your Public Page title followed by “- Booking by Bookwhen”. The description underneath includes your alert message and general information.

💡 To note: Search engines limit how much text appears in preview snippets (known as SERPs, Search Engine Results Pages). As a guide, keep meta titles to around 50–60 characters and meta descriptions to around 120–155 characters.

Additional suggestions to boost visibility

The points above focus on how your page appears to users and search engines. The following tips can also help improve trust and visibility in search results.

  • Review and complete your Account details
Add your business information and social links to build trust. These appear at the bottom of your public page and can support stronger search visibility.

  • Link your public page from your website and social media
Sharing your public page on your website and social channels makes it easier for people to find. These links also act as signals of trust and relevance for search engines.

  • Create engaging content
Write helpful descriptions and clear event details. This helps customers understand what to expect and helps search engines match your page with relevant searches.

FAQ: Why is my page not showing in search results?

Searching for your page on Google is a good way to check whether customers can find you. Search engines decide what to show in results, so visibility cannot be directly controlled. If your public page does not appear, it is usually due to one of the following reasons:

  • Your page is not allowed in search settings
You can control whether your public page appears in search engines. Check your Customise page settings for web search results to make sure your page is included.

  • Your public page is too new
New pages can take a few days or even a few weeks to appear in search results while search engines index them. If your Bookwhen page is newly created, it may not be indexed yet. Sharing your public page on social media can help speed this up.

  • Your search terms are too competitive
Search engines may show other websites they consider more relevant based on your search terms. Try refining your search by adding more detail, such as location or activity type, and follow SEO best practices to improve relevance.

💡 If your page is a few days old, your settings allow search engines, and it still does not appear after checking indexing, please contact us via live chat or email.

Advanced searches

There are several ways to refine your search terms to get more relevant results. Without using advanced Google search operators, these examples may help:

Check if your public page is indexed

You can use double quotation marks to search for an exact phrase. To do this for your public page:

  1. Open the relevant Scheduling page on your Bookwhen account

  2. Copy your public page link by selecting the double paper icon to the right of the link:

Scheduling setup view with an arrow pointing at the quick copy icon next to the public page link, indicating where users can quickly copy the link.

  3. Open Google or your search engine of choice

  4. Paste your copied public page URL in the search bar enclosed by double quotation marks:

    For example: "https://bookwhen.com/grow"

Google search bar containing the search term "<a href="https://bookwhen.com/grow" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://bookwhen.com/grow</a>"

If your public page is indexed, it appears in search results. If it isn't, search results may show a message such as No results found for "https://bookwhen.com/grow".

💡 If English is not set as the default language for your public page, search using the localised version of the URL instead.

Search for other event organisers using Bookwhen

Sometimes you may want to explore what other Bookwhen admins are offering. To narrow search results to Bookwhen pages:

  1. Open Google or your search engine of choice

  2. Search for site:bookwhen.com followed by your desired keywords.

    For example: site:bookwhen.com yoga london

Google search bar containing the search term site:bookwhen.com yoga london

💡 You can also use Google’s advanced search operators to refine your search further.
