What is a bulk booking discount?
A bulk booking discount is automatically applied when customers meet the criteria you’ve set. For example, if you’ve set a rule that customers receive a discount when they purchase 4 or more tickets in one booking, the discount will be applied at checkout without needing a code.
How multiple discounts work
If multiple discounts apply (e.g., a discount code and a bulk booking discount), the system will automatically apply the highest available discount. If the discounts apply to different tickets, both will be redeemed. For example, if a code applies to "Ticket A" and a bulk discount applies to "Ticket B," each discount will be applied accordingly.
Setting up bulk booking discounts
To set up a bulk booking discount:
Select Packages & Discounts from the left-hand menu, then Discounts:
A "discount set" is like a folder for a group of discounts, including discount codes and rules for bulk purchase discounts. You can input your discount requirements within the set, and they could be grouped around a theme, like "Summer Offers".
Select Create a discount set:
Name the set: This is an internal reference name, not the discount code. Choose something descriptive, especially if you have multiple discount codes. Example: '15% Discount'
Discount type: If you're using Passes, you can choose to make this code specifically redeemable against a pass purchase. Otherwise, select Ticket discount.
You will need to create separate discount sets if you want a discount redeemable against both tickets and passes.
Restrict from date: Customers can use the discount against valid events from the date set.
Restrict until date: Customers can use the discount against valid events until the date set here (ending at 23:59 of the specified date).
Ticket discount applies to: You can restrict discounts by entry, ticket or tag. Your options will appear when you select Add usage restriction:
Leaving it blank means customers with the discount can apply it to all events on your schedule page.
Free tickets are excluded from the bulk-booking discount offer.
You may have multiple entries or tickets with the same name, so you must choose all that are applicable. The next upcoming date and time are shown next to each entry to help identify the separate entries:
The date and time listed are for the next event in this entry. When selected, the restriction applies to all dates and times within the entry, not just the specified date and time. The next event is displayed to help differentiate between multiple entries with the same name.
Rules: Set the rule for your bulk-booking offer. Select Add discount rule:
In the Minimum tickets selected field, set the minimum selection requirement, i.e., the number of minimum tickets a customer must select to receive a discount.
Choose the rule to be either a Fixed or Percentage amount and add the discount amount, e.g. £2 or 20%.
Set an expiry date (if applicable).
Add a Days in advance limit: This option allows you to restrict the discount to tickets selected within a set number of days after the first ticket.
Restrict the selection by ticking the Only count separate events checkbox. This option counts tickets only for separate events.
Select Add rule to add the rule to the discount set, then select Save changes.
How Bulk Booking Discounts and Discount Rules Work Together
Discount rules and discount codes are independent of each other. Customers don’t need to enter a code for a bulk booking discount, as these are applied automatically.
If you delete a discount rule, any tickets purchased using that rule will be "frozen," meaning they cannot be transferred.
Setting up a 2-for-1 discount
Rule type | Only a Bulk purchase discount option is available. |
Minimum tickets selected | This is the minimum number of tickets chosen for the offer to apply. The above example has been set to "2" to apply the discount if two or more valid tickets are selected. |
Type of discount | You can decide if the discounted value is fixed or calculated as a percentage of the total value of tickets in the deal.
💡 It's essential to consider this setting carefully. In this 2-for-1 example, the single ticket cost is £5, so the total price for two tickets would be £10. The discount would be 50% off; however, the customer would still receive the offer if they select 3, 4, 5 or more tickets. Meaning they will receive 50% off their basket total.
Therefore, using the fixed discount of £5 is appropriate for this offer. The total discount will never go above £5. So even if a customer selects 10 tickets, the system would apply only the 2-for-1 offer once per booking. |
Set if this rule will expire at any point | The Discount set settings will override this if you have a date range set there too. |
Days in advance limit | The time frame between events determines whether a discount is redeemable. E.g. if you'd only like to give a discount for tickets for five events within six weeks, then enter 42 days. |
Only count separate events? | If checked, discounts will only apply if the tickets purchased are for different events. If unchecked, the discount would be valid if a customer booked for themselves and a friend for the same class on the same day. |
When finished setting up, select Add rule at the bottom and be sure to save the changes on the discount set:
You can test your discount rule by making a test booking on your public booking page as if you were a customer. You can either abandon the booking before the payment or bypass the payment altogether (if logged in and booked as an admin).
Advertising your bulk booking offer
If you offer a bulk booking discount, customers won’t need to enter a code at checkout. The discount is applied automatically when they meet the criteria. However, customers won’t be aware of the discount unless you specifically advertise the offer.
To promote it, you can use your usual marketing channels, such as email or social media. Additionally, consider adding a note to your public page, event, or ticket information.
For clarity, we recommend including explanatory text under Tickets & Costs for the events covered by your offer:
To do this:
Select the entry from your scheduling page, then Edit entry:
Select the Tickets & Costs tab, then the pencil and paper 📝 icon next to the ticket to open the settings.
Add your bulk-booking discount rule description in the Ticket details field, then select Update ticket.
Select either Save or Save & Exit to save the entry.
The description appears under the ticket name and price on your public page:
Making a bulk booking
When a customer selects the correct number of tickets eligible for a bulk booking offer, the discount is automatically applied as soon as they open their basket.
For example:
💡 To note: The customer cannot remove or combine the discount with another. The highest available discount will always apply unless the discounts are for different events or tickets.
